About This City
Hays was founded in 1867 (incorporated in 1885) near the Fort Hays Army post which was located on the banks of Big Creek and existed to protect Union Pacific Railroad workers from attack as they expanded travel by rail to the West.
Hays City drew its initial population from the town of Rome, Kansas which had been founded by Buffalo Bill Cody some months earlier. In its early days Hays City was home to a number of other notables from the days of the wild west, including General George Armstrong Custer and Wyatt Earp. Portions of old Fort Hays still exist alongside a small Buffalo herd on the southern edge of town.
Modern day Hays is a growing community, population around 20,000. It is home to Fort Hays Kansas State University, a four year liberal arts University with an on campus enrollment of nearly 5,000 and an equally large "virtual college" enrollment taking classes online. The school system also includes Hays High School, Thomas More Prep - Marian High School as well as four grade schools and two middle schools. It is also the home of the Sternberg Museum of Natural History http://www.oceansofkansas.com/Sternbrg.html. For more about Hays, please visit the City of Hays website.
